Behavioral Health at Wellspring Professional Development & Education

Professional Development and Education

We want to bring help and healing to our communities. Through professional development and education, we can activate more community members to do this very important work. The trainings we offer also build on existing connections and strengths, not only multiplying our ability to help, but also extending the reach of our help, touching more people in need.

Where Do You Offer Professional Development and Education?

Virtual Courses

Anywhere in Michigan

These services are typically provided in-person and on-site, as well as virtually.

Training Offered

Mental Health First Aid Training

Time commitment: 8 hours
Class format: Virtual or in-person

Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of substance use disorder and behavioral health issues. After completing the course, you’ll be able to help people who are dealing with a mental health issue or addiction, including those in crisis, and connect them to care.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Training

Time commitment: 3 Hours
Class format: Virtual or in-person

ACEs are traumatic events that occur during childhood and include things like abuse, neglect, violence, and growing up in a family with behavioral health problems or substance use disorders. ACEs create toxic stress that can alter children’s brain development, negatively impacting their ability to grow and learn, and their overall health.

The good news is the ACEs and their negative effects can be prevented or reduced through intervention, which is what this course teaches. It also demonstrates how to build resilience in children so they can return to a healthy state after experiencing trauma.

This training is highly recommended for those who work and interact with children on a regular basis, including teachers and other educators, social workers, foster care workers, healthcare professionals, justice system employees, members of faith-based organizations, members of youth groups, and parents.

Behavioral Health at Wellspring School Counseling Services

School Counseling Services

The State of Michigan has identified a growing need for mental health services in almost every school district in Michigan. While many schools have school counselors or school therapists, many districts have identified that the need is too great, and they need additional resources when it comes to providing mental health support for their students. In recognition of this need, we’re dedicated to making behavioral health services more accessible. One way we’re achieving this is by partnering with schools to provide counseling services.

How does this work?

Wellspring has more than 120 years of providing intervention and support to children and families in Michigan. Through this work, we recognize that there is not a one size fits all approach to dealing with mental health—and we certainly understand the impact it can have on children who are navigating mental health challenges while experiencing the common stressors that come with being in school.

If your school or district doesn’t have school social workers or therapists or need additional support, Wellspring can step in to help work with children and families. Our therapists have experience in working with IEP’s and can attend multidisciplinary meetings with families to help find the right wrap around services for each student.

Statistics Support the Need for School Counselors

  • check

1 in 5 students suffer from a mental, emotional, or behavioral health condition

Camp Hope FAQs

  • Who will be at camp with my child?

Wellspring Lutheran Services social workers serve as camp leaders. All adults at camp receive specific training in order to be a Camp Hope volunteer. Camp Hope also has a partnership with UM-Flint, which provides nursing students and their instructor as camp volunteers. We are very selective about who is at camp with your children. All adult volunteers are required to pass a criminal background check, fingerprint check and drug screen test.
  • How do I apply for camp?

Applications are accepted for children and teens ages 6-17 years old, each spring. You can download an application above. Prefer to have one mailed to you? Call 989-652-4663 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
  • How will the children get to camp?

Wellspring provides transportation to and from camp. Campers are picked up at a designated location in Frankenmuth and returned to that same location.

  • How do you select children for the camp?

A screening committee comprised of medical social workers and grief counselors from Wellspring Lutheran Services reviews all applications and determines whether or not the child would benefit from the camp experience.
  • When will I know if my child is accepted?

The Screening Committee will meet immediately after the application deadline. You will receive a letter notifying you about your child’s acceptance, along with further instructions and information about a mandatory meeting for parents/guardians.
  • What if my child has already been to this camp?

If your child has already attended Camp Hope, they will automatically be placed on the waiting list. We want to give every child an opportunity to attend this camp at least once, and space is limited to 40 campers. First priority is given to children who have never been to camp.
  • What do the kids do at camp?

The camp is set up according to the child’s age and developmental level. Children are placed in groups according to age; they participate in age-appropriate grief and fun play activities. Some of the grief activities may include creating memory pillows and treasure boxes. Fun play activities may include swimming, boating, challenge course and bonfires.
  • What if my child gets homesick?

The caring professionals and volunteers spend time with your child to assess their needs. Every attempt will be made to reassure and comfort your child. If your child is still very homesick, as a last resort they may place a phone call to home. Please note, this has only happened one time in all the years we’ve been conducting Camp Hope.
  • What if my child acts out at camp?

All campers and staff are to be treated with dignity and respect at all times. Because we will not condone any behaviors that could cause physical and/or emotional harm, we have a “Three Strikes, You’re Out” policy. It works like this:

    • Strike #1: The child’s group leader will talk to the child.
    • Strike #2: Some of the child’s recreational activities will be limited.
    • Strike #3: If the negative behaviors continue after the first two strikes, the next strike could involve dismissal from camp.
  • Does it matter who died or how long ago the death was?

No. Any child can attend who has experienced the death of a close loved one, whether a parent, sibling, grandparent, aunt, uncle, cousin, friend, classmate, babysitter or close neighbor. Children are also encouraged to attend no matter how recent or how long ago the death occurred.
  • What if I have more questions?

Call Wellspring Lutheran Services at 989-652-4663 to learn more. Our Camp Hope team will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Counseling & Therapy

If you’re here, we first want to applaud you for your courage. Recognizing that you need therapy is an important first step. Our counseling and therapy locations across Michigan are here to provide a supportive shoulder, listening ears, and constructive guidance as you work toward restoring your wellbeing.

With counseling at Wellspring, we meet you where you’re at. From your first appointment, we’ll seek to understand what brought you to therapy, and what you want to accomplish. Based on that information, we’ll walk alongside you to apply the best counseling approaches and techniques that meet your goals.

While therapy will be different for each individual, our ultimate aim is to work through the challenges in your life, whether past or present, to help you be your best self.

We are here for you; however, this page is not monitored 24/7. If you are experiencing a mental or physical health crisis, please dial 911 to seek immediate assistance. Should you wish to have follow-up care when the crisis has resolved, we would love to hear from you and provide that support.

Counseling Services

We offer comprehensive and inclusive therapy for people in a variety of life situations. Most of our counseling services accommodate both in-person and online (virtual) counseling and therapy appointments.

Individual Counseling

You'll work one-on-one with a counselor, who will offer support and guidance. Confidentiality and listening without judgment are hallmarks of our therapists, so you can express yourself freely and openly to get the most out of each session.

Couples Counseling

Marriage and couples counseling offers those who are committed to each other a safe space to work through individual or joint issues that impact their relationship.

Family Counseling

Attended by all or some members, family counseling can help improve communication, resolve conflicts, navigate changes, and ease stressful events. It often deepens connections and helps your family cope better with future challenges.

Therapeutic Approaches

Our counselors are well-versed in many different methods and modalities of therapy, and tailor the approach to each person’s needs. These approaches are offered at Wellspring locations throughout Michigan.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

A form of talk therapy, CBT is a very successful therapy that challenges negative, unhelpful, and/or unhealthy ways of thinking and/or behaving, and teaches coping skills to alter these thoughts and behaviors. It sets clients up to manage their mental and emotional wellbeing long after their last session.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR therapy is an extensively researched and proven treatment for trauma. It is also an effective PTSD treatment. EMDR treatment changes how unprocessed traumatic or triggering experiences are stored in your brain, breaking down and updating these memories so that they no longer cause distress.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT is similar to CBT in that it focuses on changing negative thinking and behaviors, but DBT has an added focus on acceptance of a client’s experiences.

Interpersonal Therapy

Formally known as Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), this evidence-based approach is used to improve relationships and social interactions with others. It can help with social isolation, unfulfilling relationships, grief, big life transitions (divorce, retirement, moving), and highly conflicting relationships (romantic, friendly, work or family).

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational interviewing is used to encourage positive changes in behavior when someone isn’t sure if they want to change, or lacks confidence in their ability to change. It has been proven effective for certain disorders and as a supplement to CBT.

Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidenced-based, short-term parent coaching program for young children with behavioral problems. It is designed to increase positive parent-child interactions, and equips parents to confidently, calmly, and consistently manage their child’s behavior. With PCIT, a therapist observes and coaches the parent in real time while the parent and child interact. If the session is in-person, the therapist is in an observation room with a one-way mirror or in another space watching a live video feed, while the parent and child are in a playroom. If it’s a virtual (aka telehealth) appointment, the therapist will watch via video and coach the parent through headphones.

Play Therapy

Geared toward kids, play therapy uses playtime to identify and work through a child’s challenges. Oftentimes kids can’t articulate their issues or process their emotions. Playing is also used to help a child learn coping skills and redirect inappropriate behavior.

Psychodynamic Therapy

In psychodynamic therapy, an individual works with a therapist to deeply understand how they feel and think. With this understanding, they can then make better choices to lead healthier, happier lives.

Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)

Much like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, TF-CBT focuses on changing negative thought patterns and behaviors, but also addresses past traumas. TF-CBT is evidenced-based for youth up to 18 years of age. The model incorporates a non-offending support person who is provided with psychoeducation regarding trauma and will be involved throughout the process. The youth identify this support person. A trauma narrative is developed and the youth is able to share this narrative with the support person. The youth will learn about trauma and its impact on the brain and body, triggers and coping skills, as well as how to desensitize from the traumatic experience and enhance their future.

Counseling FAQs

Payment & Eligibility

  • Who is eligible for therapy?

Our professional counseling is designed to support Michigan residents ranging from children (age 5 and up), adolescents and adults.

  • What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept cash and will bill health insurance whenever possible. Most insurance types accepted.
  • Do you offer financial assistance?

We currently offer a sliding fee scale. Please contact us to see if you qualify.

Session Formats & Access

  • How do I schedule an appointment?

To schedule an initial counseling appointment, please call or email us. An intake specialist will gather some basic information and help arrange your first appointment. The initial session will begin with an assessment process. This is an opportunity for your counselor to get to know you, and learn about your needs and goals. Through this assessment process, your therapist will work with you to develop a plan for your treatment.

  • Do you offer virtual counseling?

Yes, we understand that professional counseling is not one-size-fits-all, so we offer virtual/video sessions online in addition to our in-person appointments.

  • What is a typical session frequency?

Generally, people are seen once a week when they are starting treatment and session frequency typically reduces over time until discharge. Session limits are generally established as an insurance benefit. If you are interested in being seen more than once a week, you would need to check with your particular insurance company or we could check for you if you call.

  • What does an average therapy appointment look like?

Counseling sessions typically last one hour and are often directed by the patient’s current struggles, concerns or challenges. Based on this, a counselor would ask questions to guide the conversation, ask the patient to provide more insight into their feelings, and provide them with guidance to consider following the appointment.

Diagnosis & Treatment

  • Do your therapists specialize in specific issue areas?

We can provide professional counseling on a variety of specific issue areas, but it is important to note that not all specialties require a certification. For this reason, be sure to indicate if you would like support with a specific concern when you call for an appointment.

  • How do I receive a diagnosis for what I am struggling with?

Before counseling begins, you will complete a thorough assessment that will result in an initial diagnosis. A good treatment plan always begins with an accurate diagnosis. Over time, the diagnosis may be refined. Our treatment is considered evidence-based, which means the methods we employ have been tested for validity and reliability, resulting in positive outcomes. If the diagnosis is particularly difficult, then psychological testing may help.

  • Do you offer support for those struggling with substance use?

Yes, we offer behavioral counseling to help overcome addictions. For homes in which a parent or primary caregiver has a substance use disorder, we offer the Substance Use Disorder Family Support Program (SUDFSP) at select Wellspring locations.
